Obsessong: “The House That Heaven Built”

It’s rare that I ever get excited for new rock albums anymore. However, even though there have been much more pressing things going on this weekend, I am quite excited to listen to Near To The Wild Fire Of Life, the new Japandroids album that came out on Friday. This is in no small part due to the fact that if I had to choose a favorite album of the ’10s so far, it’d have to be the band’s 2012 release Celebration Rock, which is also perhaps the most aptly titled album of the decade so far. Also, the fact that it took the band a whole five years to release a follow-up has also fueled my anticipation, even if there’s also a part of me that wishes they’d broken up after that last LP. Because if I’m being honest, it’s hard to imagine them putting out a better collection of heart-pounding anthems, such as the one I’m about to talk about.

Freaky Fridays: Friday the 13th Part III

Friday the 13th Part III (1982)

“Did Friday the 13th Part III save the franchise?” The reason I ask is because I can’t fathom this series could have sustained itself for thirty-plus years with a villain with a sack on his head. It is worth noting the second film was more expensive and less successful than the first. Yet the third film had a better opening weekend than the first and was the highest grossing horror movie of 1982 after Poltergeist. All thanks to a hockey mask.

Sean’s Top 10 Video Games of 2016

As I spend my days now looking forward to the Nintendo Switch, I can’t help but remember this same feeling a year ago, when I was dreaming of finally getting my Oculus Rift. Little did I know that a few months later, a preorder communication/shipping fiasco would result in me switching over to the HTC Vive. Yeah, there was a lot of unexpected chaos in 2016, you might’ve heard.

Typically, late December and January is when I would do the most gaming, catching up on titles I missed out on now that they’re on sale, but that never happened. For a while there I got really sick and decided I only had enough energy to watch Terrace House. So anyway, even though I’m now frantically trying to get through Final Fantasy XV, The Last Guardian, Stardew Valley, Thumper, and a few others, I’m just going to have to write something about them independently when/if I finish them. Like my other lists, these are the games of 2016 that I liked in 2016.

Top 10 Anticipated Movies of 2017

Well, it’s the first week of the Trump presidency and we could all use a pick-me-up, am I right? Sometimes it might seem hard to look forward to the good times ahead, sometimes you might even forget those good times exist. This week, we’re here to remind you that’s absolutely not the case, there’s plenty to anticipate! Like, 20-or-so movies, for instance. And a 10 movies not to anticipate, but you can eagerly anticipate us discussing them negatively. That’s what people like us are for, the ruthless tearing down of other people’s hard work. Yay!

R.I.P. Mary Tyler Moore

I feel like we’ve eased up a bit on our abundance of “RIP posts”, possibly because of the overwhelming volume of boomer-era celebrities dying in the last year or so. But I still have a lot of admiration and adoration for the woman known simply as MTM, even despite the fact that I am a male and missed the ‘70s by a pretty large margin. Because unlike probably around 99.9% of my generation, I’ve seen every episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show (and a pretty decent chunk of The Dick Van Dyke Show for that matter), and I can attest that despite its very ‘70s aesthetic, is still one of the best comedy series ever made. Top 10 Movies of 2016

If 2016 was a script, it would have been rejected for being unrealistic and unrelenting. Lots of people have written something like that, but I don’t have a lot of time to work on this post because it’s already so late. This week we talk about our individual top 10 lists and try to come up with an overall list of our favorite films of the last year. Spoiler alert: we did it, we made that list. Hell yeah!
